In December 2007 I went to the doctor for a physical and it was discovered that my kidneys were failing. I was put on dialysis very suddenly. I had to close down my longstanding business while I struggled to adjust to living on a dialysis machine three days a week. Having been a successful businessman for eleven years, this was very upsetting.

I became determined to re-open my business, Ike & BG's Restaurant on Genessee Street, and that's what I've done. Now I am on dialysis three days a week and working in the restaurant three days a week.

Every year my wife Betty and I opened the restaurant on Thanksgiving and Christmas to feed people. We always say that if you come in hungry, you won't leave hungry whether you have money or not. We have been married since 1985.

I am a member of Unity Baptist Church in Buffalo. I love to play chess, pool, and cards--especially bridge.

Despite the pain and uncertainty of kidney failure, I will not let this disease control my life. Getting a new kidney would be such a blessing, and it would really allow me to fully return to my life. I have always enjoyed giving back to the community, and now I find myself asking for help.

My blood type is "O".

I am listed at Buffalo General Hospital and my transplant coordinator is Karen Paolini (716) 859-1345. You may contact me at (716) 432-1069 or ike_gray@yahoo.com.

Thank you!

Update:  Ike has had a dear friend, nephew, and his son test to become a living donor. Unfortunately these generous offers have not resulted in a new kidney.  Ike and Betty stay optimistic and hopeful.
